Gabriel Byrne on postcards
In the eighties, when he lived in London, Byrne collected hand-embroidered postcards from World War I. “In the banalities people wrote to each other, there were all kinds of stories,” he says, and performs a lilting imitation: “We’re having a fine time here at Tremore. Gertie says she feels better today. The sea air is doing her good, I’m sure. Well, that’s all for now.”
In their pith and...

The first showcase included 823 entries. This year organizers have gathered close to 2,200 books of, and about, poetry: anthologies; chapbooks; translations; poetry-related prose (essays, memoirs, academic works, biographies); poetry objects (poetry baseball cards, a series of poetry postcards); and multimedia titles published in the 14 months since the 2009 showcase. Maggie Balistreri, the...

BOMB's Paul Morris interviews Anna and Tess
PM: I love that each card that comprises an issue becomes instantly collectible. For me, part of the appeal is seeing my name appear in print alongside the USPS bar code and the wavy lines, knowing that my card is unlike any other card out there. That my own personal history becomes a part of the collaboration. Each issue can be read multiple ways, but when you add all the recipients into the...

Remembrance of Candy Bars Past
Thousands of candy bars have disappeared along the road to consolidation, including such recent delicacies as the peanut butter-and-chocolate pods known as Oompahs, the treacherously chewy Bit-o-Choc, the glorious, nougat-and-caramel-filled Milkshake, and the Bar None, an ingenious marriage of peanuts and wafers dipped in chocolate. Also gone (but not forgotten) is the curiously alluring Marathon...
